The Wish

The Wish

It was on this day forty years ago that my father,

dressed so beautifully in his Army dress-blues,

walked me down the aisle toward the love of my life

With a penny in my shoe for good luck

We passed red-velvet pews filled with family and friends

I could see the brilliant smile on his face clear to the back of the chapel

              As we walked slowly,

my father leaned to me, whispered, "Goodbye, Kel.

I love you. Have a good life."

It was a day I remember nearly every single moment

              I was twenty-three years old

              So was he

I have planned three quarters of my life

A million minutes around what I wanted

              What was intended to be

What began in a chapel that day

              What was him and me

It will now forever be the anniversary of the death of a thing

Not just "a thing", but "the thing", "my thing", "our thing"

Really, the death of so many things

Most of all, for me, the death of dreams never to be

I keep thinking of the wish my father gave to me that day

I can still hear the whisper of his voice

It was a wish that came true in so many amazing ways

              A good life

And as much as I want to hate

              I know

It is better to have been loved once,

than to have never been loved at all

              He gave me that

              In a million moments

              That started on that day

              Forty years ago

              I also know

              I gave him that

              A million moments

                of love

              A million memories

No one can take any of that away

Ripples

Ripples

There are dates that stick in your mind

Dates you never want to forget

Dates you circle in your calendar

Dates you mark with an asterisk

There are too many of those these days

                  Dates that aren't the best

Or the ones with wonderful memories attached

The ones I have noted emotionally and mentally

                         and now are for forevermore

                  They are those marking

                  The worst of times

                  The worst of days

                  The days to remind me

                  They were the dates

                  That

                        Mark his walking away

                  Throughout my life

                  I have gone through days

Doing chores or errands of just moving

                     And

                  A sudden wave of joy

                 Would ripple through my body

                  Randomly

                  It has always happened

                  These random thrills

                  That would blare at me

                  For no apparent reason

Shout out at me with ripples of joy through my body

                  Not every day

                  But often

                  In my life

My mind's way of reminding me

                  To appreciate

                      I think

                         Being alive

                  Even now

During this chaos and fear and sadness and madness

Enthralling so many of my days and nights

                  I have ripples of joy

                  A quiver against the betrayal

                  That has visited my life

That has possessed by body and mind

It is still there inside of me

                  Randomly

                  I don't know why

I have little to be joyful for

                  But

                  It is still there

                  Occasionally

                  Maybe to remind me

                  That

                  I have always been

                  That person

                  That searches for joy

Even through and beyond turmoil and sadness

                  He keeps saying

"Someone had to rip the Band Aide off"

                  That infuriates me

                  Rip it off of what?

                  My life?

                  My future?

                  My beliefs?

                  Yes, I guess

It did rip the Band Aide off of my beliefs

                  For sure

Every single thing I believed was and were and could be true

                  Was and is now exposed

                  As lies

                  About my life

The Band Aide was hiding all he never intended to bring or be

                   For me

                   For us

All I believed was real and genuine and forevermore

Is a raw truth now of nevermore

I do not know the final day

That will be circled on my calendar

I hate the thought of how many dates will be circled until then

                   Because

All the dates since the beginning of this

                   Have been so many

                   I just hope

                   That

In between the beginning until the end

                   And many days after

                   I will continue to feel

                   Random ripples of joy

To buffer the hate and hurt and devastation away

                       From me

I should mark those moments, those days

                   On my calendar

                   So I will always know

He did not have the power

                   To take all the joy

                        Away from me

I Need Flight

I Need Flight

               If you clip my wings

              I will die

              For, I must fly

I must dance with the wind

              Climb up to the sky

              Feel cotton touch my face

Melt as sugar on my tongue

              Share my heart's embrace

I seek the magic of the world

              Its blanket of grace

              Its majesty calls to me

              Lies beneath me

              Flows through me

              Is a part of me

For its open arms I ache

              If you clip my wings

                 I will die

                 I need flight

If

If

          If I stray into darkness

         Glow upon me

         If I fall into shadow

         Reach for my hand

         If I lose the melody

         Gather it for me

Tie it to a sweeping branch

          I cling to light dreams

          To flight wings

To winds that caress and hold me tight

          I am roaming

          Hiding

          Lost between blackness and midnight

          A child of belonging

            Of becoming

              Of flight

If you find me beyond the sun's rays

          Trapped in silence

          In oneness

          In shades of gray

          Save me, please

            Offer me refuge

               Before I fade away ....

The Mighty, the Meek

The Mighty, the Meek

                    The world spins

                    The road ends

                    Light whispers on the wind

                    My eyes follow the sparrow

My heart echoes the flight beat

                    My mind warring retreat

The bird lands, folds wings like hands, feet tangled on a branch

                    Their eyes meet

                    The mighty, the meek

                    Will the bird speak?

                    The bird holds its song

                    No tune

                    No melody

                    No rhapsody

                    No music

                    Where music belongs

                    Their eyes meet

                    The mighty, the meek

                    Will she speak?

                    Her arms spread wide

                        Heart

                        Soul

                        Mind

                            Collide

                    She takes flight

                    She looks for the bird

                    The bird is gone

                    But she hears its song

                    It was in her

                    All along

                    The mighty, the meek

                    In the middle they meet

                    One song they sing

                    One life

                    One being
